e-POWER: Nissan’s unique electrified powertrain, now unplugged

December 15th 2022

Nissan introduced the innovative drive system e-POWER to customers, marking a significant milestone in the electrification strategy under Nissan Intelligent Mobility. The e-POWER system is a unique approach to electrification by making every day driving both enjoyable and efficient and is introduced to the new X-Trail and Qashqai models.

The technology of e-POWER

The e-POWER system features a full electric-motor drive, meaning that the wheels are completely driven by the electric motor. The power from a high-output battery is delivered to the e-POWER’s compact powertrain comprised of a gasoline engine, power generator, inverter, and a motor. In conventional hybrid systems, a low-output electric motor is mated to a gasoline engine to drive the wheels when the battery is low (or when traveling at high speeds). However, in the e-POWER system, the gasoline engine is not connected to the wheels; it simply charges the battery. And unlike a full EV, the power source originates from the engine and not just the battery.

This system structure generally requires a bigger motor and battery because the motor is the only direct source to drive wheels.  This has made it hard for the automotive industry to mount the system in compact cars. However, Nissan has cracked the code and learned how to minimize and reduce weight, develop more responsive motor control methods and optimize energy management. As a result, e-POWER uses a smaller battery than the LEAF, but delivers the same driving experience as a full EV.

Why e-POWER?

Unplugged

The e-POWER system offers all the benefits of an EV without having to worry about charging the battery. As such e-Power is an ideal technology for those who cannot or do not want to take time to recharge with a cable but face a daily urban or suburban drive, and who are ready to make the first move in their transition to a full EV in the future.

No worries about the range

e-POWER skips the initial hurdles some have with electric vehicles. Because the battery is kept full by the petrol engine, you can begin long journeys free from range anxiety.

Smooth, quiet & relaxing

The innovative system delivers massive torque almost instantly, which enhances drive response and results in smooth acceleration. Also, the system operates very quietly, much like a full EV. The electric motor runs silently, and combined with the petrol engine, produces minimal emissions, so driving an e-POWER is a serene and pleasant experience.

Fuel efficiency

Because e-POWER relies on the engine much less frequently, its fuel efficiency is comparable to that of leading conventional hybrids, especially during around-the-town commutes. With reduced CO2 and particle emissions, it is softer with the environment and offers a smaller environmental footprint compared to conventional petrol-fuelled vehicles.

e-Pedal

Similar to the LEAF, the new X-trail and Qashqai e-POWER benefit from an entirely new "one pedal' driving experience called e-Pedal Step. Designed to take the repetitive strain out of stop-start urban driving, where the driver is frequently moving their foot between the accelerator and brake, e-Pedal Step allows drivers to accelerate and brake using just the accelerator. e-pedal offers a more relaxing way to drive, and makes you feel generally more in-control and relaxed behind the wheel.
